FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What age should my child start violin or viola?

Children can begin lessons as early as 4 years old if they can focus, follow simple instructions, and enjoy learning through music. Every child develops differently, so a trial lesson is the best way to determine readiness.

Do you teach adults?

Yes. Many of my students are adults learning for the first time or returning after a break. Lessons are personalized to each student’s goals, whether for enjoyment, personal growth, or performance.

Do you teach using the Suzuki Method?

Yes. I incorporate the strengths of the Suzuki Method, especially for young beginners, while also teaching music reading, technique, rhythm, and ear training. Lessons are adapted to each student’s learning style rather than following one method exclusively.

Do online lessons work?

Yes. Online lessons are effective for many students and work well for technique, repertoire, music reading, and guided practice. They are a flexible option for busy families and students who live outside the Chicago area.

What violin or viola should I buy?

I recommend waiting until after your trial lesson before purchasing an instrument. I can help you choose the correct size and recommend reliable rental or purchase options that fit your budget.

Why should I choose private lessons instead of group classes?

Private lessons provide individualized instruction that matches each student’s pace, goals, and learning style. Students receive immediate feedback, develop strong technical foundations, and make steady progress through a personalized learning plan.

How often should my child take lessons?

For most students, one lesson per week provides the best balance of consistent progress and independent practice. More frequent lessons can be arranged for audition preparation or intensive study.

Do I need any musical experience?

No. Many students begin with no previous musical experience. Lessons are designed for complete beginners as well as students with prior training.

Where are lessons held?

Private lessons are available in Chicago and online. Depending on the lesson type, in-home lessons may also be available.

Can parents observe lessons?

Yes. Parents are welcome to observe younger students’ lessons, especially during the beginning stages. As students become more independent, parental involvement can be adjusted based on what best supports their learning.
